INTRODUCATION TO PHONETICS

 WHAT IS PHOTNETICS ?

Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that studies the physical properties of speech sounds. Phonetics is the systematic study of human speech sounds, focusing on how they are produced, transmitted, and perceived. It provides the foundation for understanding pronunciation, speech variation, and the mechanics of spoken communication.

It deals with physical side of spoken language. It looks at the actual speech sound (phones) not their meaning or grammatical role.

Why it matters: Without phonetics, we would not have a systematic way to describe sounds across different languages.
